Introduction: Why Walkability Matters
One thing we're hearing from house hunters more and more often is "Can I live there without a car?" Walkability isn’t just a nice-to-have, for many it’s an absolute essential lifestyle choice! Why is walkability becoming "a thing" and which types of house hunters are prioritising it:
Retirees who don’t want to drive anymore
Americans looking for a lifestyle shift, away from car-dependence
House hunters concerned about the environmental impact of daily driving
Cost conscious house hunters who want to avoid the expense of owning and running a car
Non-EU house hunters without the language skills to pass the Spanish driving test
While many coastal towns in Spain look like they might be walkable on Google maps, the reality on the ground is often very different. It's easy to fall in love with a property portal but if you're stuck in a tiny village with no public transport , carless life can get dull fast.
This guide is designed to help you compare the top four walkable towns side-by-side and understand what walkability really looks like here on the Costa Dorada.
What We Mean by ‘Walkable’
To keep this as simple as possible we’ve defined walkability based on the services and infrastructure that make day-to-day life possible without a car.
We looked at whether you can walk to:
A train station
A big supermarket (not just a summer only tourist convenience store)
Daily, year-round cafe & restaurant options
A CAP (Spain’s local public health centres)
A bank
We have used a 2km radius to measure the services - most reasonably fit people are comfortable walking this distance in 20-30mins.
⚠️ Keep in mind: In July and August walking anywhere after 11am and before sun down becomes very uncomfortably sweaty fast.
Top 4 Most Walkable Costa Dorada Beach Towns
📍 We consider these towns offer house hunters the strongest year-round services within walking distance. Ideal for relocating house hunters who want to live car-free full-time.

Our local insights:
Seasonal walkability: Some of the beach towns like Segur, Cunit or Cubelles are walkable in summer but have very limited services in winter, especially supermarkets and restaurants. Great for holiday home buyers or seasonal renters only intending to visit the property during the warmer months.
House type matters: Typically speaking apartments are usually located along the beach front and offer better walkability. Villas with pools are often set back from the beach or in urbanisations so often a car is required.
Airport access: If you plan to live car-free, and you expect to travel internationally often or host regular visitors, it’s worth checking how long it actually takes to reach the airport by public transport. Sitges has a very fast direct airport bus service.
Hospital access: If you require medical attention beyond the capabilities of the local CAP, outside of public transport hours you'll have to take an ambulance or a taxi to the nearest hospital.
Buy yourself a Carrito: (Shopping trolley). You'll see them used everywhere in Spain, used by people of all ages, not just retirees. They make walking home with a week's shopping much easier.
Final Word: Walkability Is Just One Piece of the Puzzle
Being able to live without a car can be a top lifestyle priority for some house hunters. But the most walkable towns might not be within your budget and not every walkable area has the type of home you’re looking for.
That’s why finding the right home for your unique situation takes alot more than scrolling through property portals. It takes local area knowledge, a deep understanding of your lifestyle needs, and a clear view of how to prioritise and when to compromise.
At Homesmith, we help house hunters like you figure all that out without the overwhelm.
